The IChemE Global Awards were held this year on 5th November at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole Hotel. Roughly 500 attendees from all over the world gathered to celebrate excellence in chemical engineering worldwide.
Simon Carves were once again proud to sponsor an award, this year supporting the Research Project of the Year Award for the project or process that best demonstrates a novel chemical or biochemical engineering solution to improve resource efficiency, lifetime value and/or process automation.
Our Director of Operations, Richard Buckley, was delighted to present the award to Laurentian University and Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations in Canada for their ‘Industrial off-gas supports biofuel production’.
“Ore smelters discharge considerable quantities of waste heat and CO2 in their off-gas. Keen to reduce environmental burdens, a programme was created between Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations and Laurentian University to research the capture of waste off-gas heat and mitigation of CO2 by the growth of microalgae for the production of clean-burning biodiesel. An end-use for this biofuel includes improving underground mine air quality by replacing petrochemical diesel.” – IChemE Global Awards Shortlist.
The top winner of the night, taking home the Oil and Gas Award and the overall Award for Outstanding Achievement in Chemical and Process Engineering went to the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland Washington, USA for their novel fracturing fluid design to ‘make fracking greener’.
The event was hosted by BBC business Journalist Steph McGovern who created a wonderful rapport with the award presenters and winners.
In his welcome addresses IChemE Chief Executive David Brown spoke of the success of the IChemE’s ‘Why Not ChemEng’ platform which has helped quadruple the number of people studying Chemical Engineering since it started. IChemE President Andrew Jamieson celebrated the truly global nature of the IChemE and congratulated all of the winners saying; “IChemE is a truly international institution and tonight’s diverse range of winners from industry and academia is a compelling illustration of our commitment to recognise and advance chemical engineering worldwide.”
As always the event provided a wonderful opportunity for networking and for recognising outstanding achievements in the industry. We’re already looking forward to next year!
